Drexel Boulevard was one of the South Side's broad residential avenues, where substantial houses stood along a tree-lined roadway. This c1907 view comes from a large 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, the kind the Detroit Publishing Company used to build its catalog of American streets and scenery in the early 1900s. The company's notes list the photographer as possibly Hans Behm, and the plate's size and format show the careful, deliberate work of that era. Images like this record how Chicago's wealthier neighborhoods looked just after the city's boulevard building boom.
