Gloria Dei, better known as Old Swedes' Church, stands on South Swanson Street in Philadelphia's Queen Village neighborhood and is the oldest church in the city still in use. Swedish Lutheran settlers began building it in the 1690s, when Philadelphia was still a young colony and the Delaware River waterfront was the center of trade and daily life. Its stone walls, low profile and modest tower reflect the simple construction of that early period, and the building has survived through centuries of change around it. Visitors often notice how its quiet churchyard contrasts with the dense city blocks that now surround it.
