Gloria Dei, long known as Old Swedes' Church, is the subject of this 1936 poster. Its congregation dates to the Swedish Lutherans who settled the area in the 1600s, and the church building has stood in South Philadelphia since the early 1700s. The silkscreen came out of the Works Progress Administration's poster program, with the Federal theater Project as sponsor, and it promotes the city's historic sites to visitors during the Depression. Its flat, graphic style was typical of WPA posters, which were designed to be read quickly from a distance.
