Cigarettes and a burning forest are the two subjects tied to this 1936 silkscreen poster, which the Federal theater Project sponsored under the federal New Deal arts programs. Its message is fire prevention aimed at careless smokers, a common target of forest protection campaigns in the 1930s. Silkscreen let the WPA poster units print bold, flat-colored designs in large runs at low cost, and that technique shapes the poster's stark look. A date stamp on the back, January 13, 1939, shows the print was handled and filed a few years after it was first made.
