This aerial view shows Levittown, the Long Island suburb in Nassau County that Levitt & Sons began building in 1947 on former potato fields. The photograph, taken in 1954 by an aerial photography firm, captures the development's repeated rows of nearly identical houses, laid out on a grid of curving streets. Levittown became a national symbol of postwar suburban growth and of the mass-production methods that aimed to put a home within reach of returning veterans and young families.
