This drawing sets out the plan, cross-sections, and elevation of a lock on the Erie Canal, the waterway that carried boats across New York State from Albany to Buffalo after it opened in 1825. It was prepared under the direction of Professor D.H. Mahan, who taught engineering at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and the work was carried out by Orlando M. Poe, a cadet there. Such detailed drawings were used in training future engineers, and the ink and watercolor rendering shows how a lock lifted and lowered vessels between the canal's different water levels.
