This 1848 hand-colored lithograph shows Aurora, a village on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake in central New York, as seen from a spot the title places among the North Poplars. Town views like this were commercial productions of the 1840s, when lithography made it affordable to issue detailed landscape and village prints for local residents and visitors. Its viewpoint from high ground lets the viewer take in the street pattern, the lakefront, and the surrounding countryside. The hand coloring, added to each impression, gives the print the individual character typical of the period.
