The name on this lithograph points to the Niagara Elevator, one of the grain storehouses along Buffalo's harbor, shown here with ships alongside. Buffalo became a major grain port after the Erie Canal opened in 1825 linked the Great Lakes to New York markets, and its waterfront filled with tall elevators that moved wheat and corn between lake vessels and rail or canal boats. Printed by Sage, Sons & Co. in the 1870s, the color sheet was likely a commercial view meant to show the scale of that trade, and it remains a useful record of the working harbor.
