Buffalo sits at the eastern end of Lake Erie, and its growth owed much to the Erie Canal, which opened in 1825 and linked the lake to the Hudson River and New York Harbor. Grain, lumber and manufactured goods moved through its waterfront in great volume, and the city became one of the busiest inland ports in the country, with mills, rail yards and grain elevators lining the shore. A view of the city from this era offers a window onto that industrial expansion and the working harbor that drove it.
