Rather than a finish or a portrait of a jockey, this picture catches the start of a race at Long Branch, the seaside resort whose summer racing meets drew wealthy crowds in the late 19th century. The moment of the start was a delicate one, when a starter had to get the field away evenly, and photographs of it were rare because early camera exposures were too slow to freeze fast motion easily. The title places the scene in "N.Y.," but Long Branch is on the Jersey Shore in New Jersey, a discrepancy worth keeping in mind for researchers.
