The Upper Falls of the Genesee River at Rochester, New York, were the reason the city existed. Water dropping about 96 feet over the limestone ledge drove the mills that made Rochester a flour-milling center in the nineteenth century, and the gorge below the falls became one of the busiest industrial corners in the region. Lithographs and engravings of the falls like this one were popular with travelers and boosters who wanted to show off the city's energy and its scenic setting. Look closely at the bridges and the mill buildings crowding the banks, since they show how quickly the river's power was turned to commercial use.
