From the steel arch bridge spanning the gorge below the falls, this view looks back toward the cataract from a vantage few visitors of the period could reach on foot. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of American scenery, made the two large glass negatives sometime between 1890 and 1901, when the bridge was a fairly new link between the United States and Canada. The company's 1901 catalog suggests the image reflects Niagara as tourists saw it at the turn of the century, with the river, rock ledges, and spray recorded in the sharp detail that 8 by 10 inch plates allowed.
