This view of Niagara Falls is taken from an original painting by M. C. Tunison, so it shows the cataract as one artist saw it rather than through a camera lens. The falls lie on the Niagara River along the border between New York and Ontario, and the American side became the Niagara Reservation, New York's first state park, in 1885. Before photography and rail excursions made the site a major destination, paintings and prints like this one helped shape how travelers pictured the falls.
