Naval combat on Lake Champlain, rather than land fighting around the town itself, is the subject of this hand-colored engraving. The battle of September 11, 1814, pitted an American squadron under Thomas Macdonough against a British flotilla commanded by George Downie, and the American victory forced the British army under Governor General Sir George Prevost to abandon its invasion of New York. Prints like this one, made in the years after the war, helped Americans picture a triumph that turned the tide of the northern campaign. The record dates it only approximately, so the exact year of printing remains uncertain.
