This lithograph asks viewers, in bold lettering, "Are you trained to defend your country?" and names Plattsburgh, the New York town whose summer training camp gave the poster its appeal. The Military Training Camps Association ran the camps beginning in 1915 to give civilians, especially college men and professionals, a few weeks of military instruction. Printed in 1917, as the United States was preparing to enter the First World War, the poster was meant to recruit volunteers and make the case for citizen soldiers and officer training.
