Few war posters came from a cartoonist as famous as Winsor McCay, the creator of the *Little Nemo* comic strip and the animated film *Gertie the Dinosaur*. Here he turns his pen to the home front, telling those who could not enlist to buy a Liberty Bond instead. Liberty Bonds let the U.S. government borrow from ordinary citizens to pay for the war after the country entered in 1917, and the 1918 bond campaigns relied on posters like this one to reach the public. The slogan "Defend your country with your dollars" frames financial support as a patriotic duty.
