The poster's title, "The minute men of to-day are going to Plattsburgh," refers to the civilian training camp at Plattsburgh, New York, where men went for short courses in military drill before the United States entered the First World War. The Military Training Camps Association, which produced the lithograph, borrowed the image of the Revolutionary-era minute men, militia who were ready to fight at a moment's notice, to present volunteer training as a patriotic duty. Printed in 1917, the year the country declared war on Germany, it was meant to recruit men who could form the core of a larger citizen army.
