Few recruiting posters from the First World War rely on words alone, and this one, numbered 33 in its series, makes its case with a blunt line: "More men are wanted for his majesty's army." Issued by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee in 1915, it belongs to a campaign launched that year to attract volunteers as casualties mounted on the Western Front and the war dragged on. Its plain lettering in color lithograph was designed to be read at a glance from a street hoarding or shop window, speaking directly to the men of military age the government hoped to reach.
