Rather than calling men to the trenches of Europe, this poster asks Americans to look to the Mexican border, where it says 26,000 men are needed to relieve the watch along the Rio Grande. The title plays on the "Watch on the Rhine," setting a distant European front against a closer and less glamorous duty to suggest that the need at home was just as urgent. Designed by Gordon Grant, a U.S. Army captain and marine artist, it is the fourth in a recruiting series issued in 1917, the first year of American entry into the war.
