Lake George, in the Adirondack foothills of upstate New York, was a favorite subject for Currier & Ives, and this hand-colored lithograph shows the lake in its autumn dress. The firm, based in New York City, issued thousands of such scenes between the 1850s and the early 1900s, selling them cheaply to a broad public eager for images of American landscape. Lake George drew steady numbers of tourists by steamboat and rail during this period, which helped make it a recognizable subject for the printmakers. Hand coloring, applied to each sheet, gives prints like this one their warm, varied tones.
