This glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection shows Franklin D. Roosevelt at a launch the record labels only as "Tenn." The abbreviation is not explained, and the Bain News Service title is unverified, so the ship or event it refers to is uncertain. Roosevelt served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy from 1913 to 1920, a post that brought him to many shipyard launches and naval ceremonies, so the setting fits his work of that period. The Bain News Service photographed Washington officials and public events for newspapers, which makes the image a useful record of how such ceremonies were staged.
