Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, made this glass negative, and its title, Franklin D. Roosevelt, comes from caption cards whose accuracy has not been verified, so the sitter and date remain uncertain. The Bain agency sold news photographs of politicians, public figures and current events from about 1900 through the 1920s, and Roosevelt was a rising national figure in that period, serving as assistant secretary of the Navy before his 1920 run for vice president. Glass plates like this one were the standard working medium of news photographers of the day, which makes the negative a useful record of how such portraits were made and distributed.
