Houston, Texas, in 1922 was a growing commercial city whose fortunes rested on oil, cotton, and shipping. The Houston Ship Channel, dredged to the Gulf and opened in 1914, had turned the city into a deep-water port, and refineries and oil companies were expanding along its banks. Railroads radiated from downtown, moving cotton, lumber, rice, and petroleum to market, and the city's business district was filling with office buildings like the Keystone, which rose above the streets where merchants, bankers, and oilmen met. Houstonians of the period knew their city as a rising center of Gulf Coast commerce, still tied to the cotton trade that had long defined the region.
