This print belongs to Eadweard Muybridge's series on horse gaits, made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 and 1879. It shows a horse in the ambling, or single-foot, gait, a smooth four-beat walk in which the legs on each side move in close succession. Muybridge ran a row of cameras along a track, each triggered by the passing horse, to capture motion too quick for the eye. The image was published in 1881 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where it was one of many plates meant to show how animals actually move.
