Plate 13 in Eadweard Muybridge's *Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows horses performing the ambling, or single-foot, gait, a smooth four-beat stride in which one foot lifts at a time. The series was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, when Muybridge lined up a row of cameras along a track and fired them with tripwires as the animals passed. The 1881 book and its prints were meant to replace guesswork about how animals actually move with photographic evidence, and this sequence captures a gait that is hard to follow with the naked eye.
