The title, *The Eleven of New England*, does not say who or what the eleven are, so the subject has to be read from the image itself. The shelflist card links the piece to Bufford, most likely the Boston lithographer John H. Bufford, whose firm produced portraits, views, and printed sheets for a wide audience in the mid-19th century. Lithographs of this kind were relatively inexpensive to reproduce, so they circulated widely and often expressed local pride in a region that still looked back to its Puritan and Pilgrim beginnings.
