Set in Virginia rather than Plymouth, this engraving shows Pocahontas's 1614 marriage to the English planter John Rolfe, an event that briefly brought peace between the Powhatan people and the Jamestown colonists. The image reproduces a painting, and the romantic staging reflects the 19th-century taste for colonial legends. Its popularity helped turn Pocahontas into a national symbol, even though the historical record of her life is limited and often distorted in popular retellings.
