Few towers in Massachusetts rise so far above their surroundings as the granite shaft in this view, which matches the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown. Built between 1907 and 1910, it honors the Mayflower passengers who first came ashore at the tip of Cape Cod in late 1620, and it stands on a hill above the town where it can be seen from a long way off. The dark stone and strong tonal contrast suit a black and white image, and the trees at its base show how the tower sits within the wooded landscape.
