The scene here is the signing of the Mayflower Compact, the agreement drafted aboard the ship in 1620 while it lay at anchor off Cape Cod, before the Pilgrims went ashore at Plymouth. This color halftone reproduces an oil painting by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris, who specialized in historical scenes of American events. It was issued in the *Pageant of a Nation* series, published in Cleveland around 1932, when such prints were popular in schools and homes. The record also names Myles Standish among the subjects, tying the image to one of the colony's best-known military figures.
