Rather than a town street or a famous building, this 1866 lithograph shows a specific autumn task: making cider. Apples were ground and pressed on New England farms through the 19th century, and the finished cider was often stored in cellars to last the winter. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that published the print, produced many idealized scenes of rural life that appealed to city buyers. The image is worth studying for its picture of the seasonal labor involved, though it presents that work more cheerfully than it was.
