The Witch No. 1" is a Boston-subject print by J.E. Baker, issued in New York by Geo. H. Walker & Co. and entered for copyright on February 29, 1892. The date falls just after the bicentennial of the Salem witch trials of 1692, when New England's old fears of witchcraft were again in the public eye through lectures, pageants, and commemorative writing. The Walker firm was a prolific publisher of lithographed and illustrated work at the time, and its imprints often blended humor with popular folklore. The record gives little detail about the figure or composition, so the print is best read as a product of that anniversary moment, when the image of the witch had become a familiar and marketable New England symbol.
