Sidon, the ancient Phoenician port on the coast of present-day southern Lebanon, is the subject, and the title directs the eye past the town toward the mountains beyond. The plate belongs to *The Holy Land*, a series of color lithographs made after sketches David Roberts drew on his travels in the region in 1839, with the stones prepared by Louis Haghe. Issued in London by F.G. Moon in parts between 1842 and 1845, the views were popular with Victorian readers who had little firsthand knowledge of the Near East.
