Edward Williams Clay's lithograph turns the 1844 Democratic contest into a barbershop, with a steam-powered shop where James Gordon Bennett, Richard M. Johnson, and Martin Van Buren are the figures in view. Willis & Probst of Wall Street in New York issued the print, and Clay's monogram identifies him as its designer, a caricaturist of partisan politics. The joke would have landed with contemporary readers because Van Buren's bid for renomination faltered that year after his opposition to annexing Texas split his party. Its mock-patent title was a common satirical device of the period.
