Few places in New England make their past as visible as Nantucket, and this etching turns that attention to a shop that sold the island's history back to visitors. The title, *Ye Olde Curiosity Shop*, uses the quaint spelling that was popular in the early twentieth century, after the whaling economy had faded and tourists began arriving to buy souvenirs, scrimshaw and sea relics. The print is signed in pencil by hand, which suggests the artist's direct involvement in this impression. The record gives only "19--" as the date, so the exact year is unrecorded, but the subject places it in that later period of Nantucket's reinvention.
