The title, "The bum shop," points to the padded hip supports that many women wore beneath their skirts in the 1780s, which London caricaturists loved to mock. This July 1785 engraving was published by S.W. Fores, a London print seller who issued many topical satires of the period. Its record lists "Women" and "Clothing" as subjects, so the joke likely turns on the exaggerated silhouette of the fashion itself. The date and attribution come from an unverified caption card, so the details of the scene should be read with that caveat in mind.
