A wood engraving of a sutler's store at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, shows soldiers of Gen. Geary's division crowding in to make purchases, a scene that captures the everyday commerce of the Civil War camps. Sutlers were licensed civilian merchants who followed the army and sold goods that soldiers could not get from the government, from tobacco and writing paper to food and small luxuries. The picture appeared on the front page of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper in late November 1862, when the Union army held Harper's Ferry and its surrounding camps.
