Harry W. Zeamer's drug store in Columbia, Pennsylvania, is the subject here, a shop front that a passerby of the period would have recognized as a neighborhood fixture. The record dates the photograph only to the 1900s, but that decade was a busy one for American pharmacies, which combined dispensing prescriptions with soda fountains, patent medicines, toiletries and sundries. Columbia, a river town in Lancaster County, had many such stores, and this view lets you see how a small-town druggist arranged his storefront to draw customers in from the street. Prints of this kind are useful to researchers studying commercial architecture and everyday retail life of the era.
