Dyea, a windswept settlement at the head of Alaska's Taiya Inlet, was the main starting point for the Chilkoot Trail, and this view of Healy & Wilson's store shows the outfitting trade that grew up around that route. Around 1897, when the Klondike gold rush was drawing thousands of prospectors north, merchants like these sold the food, tools, and clothing that stampeders needed before they tackled the steep climb over the pass into the Yukon. The caption card ties the scene to the Dyea trail and to the wider Yukon boomtowns, which makes it a useful record of how the gold rush supply economy worked. The card's date and attribution are unverified, so treat the details as a general picture of Dyea in those years.
