Two storefronts face each other across the main street of Cumberland, Virginia, in this view taken from across the road: the Cumberland Drug Store and the J.R. Godsey & Co. store. The photograph dates to about 1915, when small county seats like Cumberland were the commercial centers for surrounding farm families, who came to town to buy supplies, fill prescriptions, and do business. Drug stores of that era often combined pharmacy shelves with soda fountains and sundries, while general merchandise firms sold dry goods, hardware, and groceries. The picture offers a useful record of how a rural Virginia main street was built and used in the early twentieth century.
