Greenbelt, Maryland, was one of three "greenbelt towns" the federal government began building in the mid-1930s as planned communities meant to combine housing, shops, and open land. This July 1946 view shows a woman weighing produce in one of the town's grocery stores, a small everyday scene from a community designed around cooperative living. The photograph was made for the Federal Public Housing Authority, and its caption card is noted as unverified, so the photographer's name, Gretchan Van Tassel, is best read as the record's attribution rather than a confirmed fact.
