Hickok's patent cider mill is the subject here, a piece of farm machinery shown in full working order rather than a landscape or a portrait. The wood engraving was printed by Scheffer & Beck of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a firm that produced trade and advertising prints, so the picture was meant to sell the machine to farmers as much as to record it. Cider was a common product of mid-nineteenth-century American farms, and mills like this one, which crushed apples before pressing, marked a step toward more mechanized agriculture. The combination of engraved image and printed text reflects how manufacturers of the period used pictures to promote their goods.
