The San Lorenzo Paper Mill in Santa Cruz appears here as one half of a stereographic pair, issued as number 52 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series. Albumen prints like this one were mounted on card and viewed through a stereoscope, a parlor favorite of the 1860s that made flat photographs look three-dimensional. Only this half of the pair survives in the Library's holdings, so the depth effect is not available here. The catalog files the view under lumber mills, and the caption data is unverified, so the mill's exact product is worth confirming.
