Electricity is the unusual detail in this view of a silver mill in Virginia City, Nevada, where machinery was more often driven by steam. The town sat atop the Comstock Lode, discovered in 1859, whose silver and gold drew a flood of miners, investors, and mill builders to the district. This albertype comes from a souvenir series photographed by Jas. H. Crockwell, and the albertype process, a photomechanical method that reproduced continuous tones, let such views reach print in bulk. The record's details are unverified, so treat the specific mill and date as approximate.
