Graphite on paper, this drawing looks up the North Mill Pond in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a tidal basin ringed by the mill buildings and wharves that once made the waterfront a center of work. Portsmouth was one of the busiest seaports in colonial and early national New England, and by the 1870s its harbor economy still depended on shipbuilding, milling, and trade along the Piscataqua River. The drawing, dated only to between 1870 and 1879, shows the pond as a working place, and it is worth noticing how the artist fixes the waterline and the structures on the banks rather than treating the scene as empty scenery.
