This view looks inland across North Mill Pond toward the rooftops and waterfront of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, rather than out to the harbor as many local views do. The title dates the scene to July 4, 1873, although the caption card records no date, so that detail comes from the drawing's own label. Portsmouth was a working port on the Piscataqua River, and its millponds once powered sawmills and other shops. The image reproduces a drawing by E. Whitfield, so it shows the town as an artist chose to record it.
