Youngstown, in Ohio's Mahoning Valley, was one of the country's great steel towns, and this 1953 view of its mills comes from the strong postwar years of American steelmaking. Furnaces and rolling operations there drew workers and families from across the region and abroad. Steel output in the valley collapsed in the late 1970s, so pictures like this now record an economy many residents still remember. The record does not name the photographer or the exact mill shown.
