The caption names the Flagstaff Lumber Manufacturing Company's saw mill, set in the town that grew up around the ponderosa pine forests of northern Arizona. Flagstaff's lumber trade expanded after the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad reached the town in 1882, since the railroad made it practical to ship cut timber to markets beyond the region. The print is credited to B. Hock of the News Depot in Flagstaff, though the caption card's details, including the undated record, have not been verified.
