Clark Mills's bronze of Andrew Jackson is remarkable for its pose: the horse rears on its hind legs, with its tail and rear hooves bearing the weight. Mills cast the statue himself in Washington, a feat that made it a landmark of American metalwork. It was unveiled in Lafayette Square in 1853, on the anniversary of Jackson's victory at New Orleans, and its balance and scale drew wide notice from the start. The print's date is not recorded, so it is best read as a record of a statue that was already well known in its own time.
