A street sign reading "Rivington Street" places this view on the Lower East Side, a dense district of tenements that in about 1909 housed some of the largest immigrant populations in New York. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its views of American towns and scenery, made the glass negative, and its record lists the scene's streets and markets as subjects. The negative is broken across the center and top, and the damage gives the crowded street a fragmented look.
