The Senate dome shown here is one of the sheets from Benjamin Henry Latrobe's work on the United States Capitol, which he supervised after the British burned the building in 1814. Drawn in ink, watercolor, and graphite between about 1815 and 1817, the plan and sections set out how the timber framing of the Senate chamber's dome would be assembled, and the handwritten computations along the sheet show the structural arithmetic behind it. Latrobe, a trained English-born architect who had settled in America, was rebuilding the Capitol in a period when its wooden roof framing and masonry walls were still being sorted out, so drawings like this one carried real weight on site.
